Mykonos Paleokastro Monastery

Location: Ano Mera

The Monastery of Paleokastro in Mykonos is located on a hill close to Ano Mera, the second village of Mykonos, in one of the greenest spots on the island.
It comprises a nunnery (female monastery) and dates from the 18th century. Its architecture is typical Cycladic. It was named after the close remains of the Gyzi Castle, which is also known as Paleokastro (meaning Old Castle in Greek).

The monastery is close to one of the two ancient towns of Mykonos. Some meters away is a church dedicated to Saint Vlasis that stands out for its beautiful dovecote. You can also see a strange prehistoric tomb consisting of a giant granite rock that rises 3 meters above sea level.

How to get there

The Monastery of Paleokastro is located in Ano Mera village.

Car rental: There's the option of renting a car and picking it up directly from the airport, port, or your hotel. Using a rental car allows visitors to discover the Monastery of Paleokastro and many other places of interest at their own pace.

Public transport: Close to Ano Mera Village lies the Monastery of Paleokastro (a 3-minute walk). Note that there are two central bus stations in Mykonos Town: Fabrika and Old Port. Several buses depart from Fabrika to Ano Mera during the day. Itineraries might change according to the season. Check the official timetables here.
