Milos Zefyria

General information

Zefyria Village in Milos is a small agricultural settlement built by the Venetians that used to be the Milos’ capital before it was moved to Plaka. It developed during the 13th century mainly because of the commercial activity of pirates that had the island as a stronghold and trading center.
During the late 18th century, the inhabitants started abandoning the village due to a series of earthquakes that destroyed their houses and buildings. Additionally, a large amount of poisonous gas was emitting from the rifts, causing illnesses and further pushing them to move their settlement.

One of the most important sights in Zefyria is the church of Panagia Portiani which used to be the Metropolis of Milos. It was constructed in the 17th century and is the only one of its time that is preserved to this day. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, and every August 15th, a grand feast is organized by the locals to commemorate the event. The church is currently considered a monument, and visitors have the opportunity to admire delightful murals, while many of its icons have been moved to the church of the Assumption in Adamas.

The wider region around the main settlement hosts the airport of Milos.
