The church of Agia Triada in Chora is the oldest church in Kythnos and the metropolis of the island’s capital. It is a small church with a long history, evidenced by old sculptures and inscriptions.
The founder of this Byzantine religious landmark is still unknown, yet the person behind the lovely hagiography is known; the high priest Bartholomew Deangelis painted the lovely murals in the 17th century.
Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) is celebrated on the Pentecost, the movable feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. On that day, a celebration (panigiri) is held, with people from all over the island paying the church a visit.
Part of the relics of Agios Ignatios, Metropolitan of Mariupol, is kept within the church. As Ignatios was Kythnian, his relics were donated to his hometown.
