Koufonisia Geography

Koufonisia is a small cluster of islands that geographically belong to the Small Eastern Cyclades. Located between Naxos and Amorgos, Koufonisia Islands are mainly divided into Pano (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Koufonisi. Of these two, only Pano Koufonisi is inhabited. As most of the inhabitants occupy with fishing, you will see many fishing boats moored at the small port of the village.

The geography of Koufonisia is generally flat. Most of the organized beaches in Pano Koufonisi are located on the southern and eastern side of the island, very close to the main village. Some beaches have sand, like Pori, while others are rocky, such as Gala. The distinguishing thing is the rocky caves with the crystal water that dot the landscape.

The highest peak is Prophet Elias at an altitude of 114 meters. Kato Koufonisi, reachable by boat, has nice beaches with crystal water and barren landscape. This uninhabited island has today the only remains from the ancient history of Koufonisi. Close to Koufonisi, there is also the uninhabited island of Keros, famous for the archaeological excavations performed there.
