Kea Local products

Although the main products of Kea suffered some changes over time, the island has kept its age-old traditions. During the last period of Turkish rule and until the beginning of the 20th century, the main product of the island was the acorn, which was used as a raw material in the tanneries at that time. In fact, their exportation developed the island's economy.

Although the local economy is no longer supported by acorns, Kea is still covered by dense clusters of oak trees that shelter a rich fauna. When it comes to economic activities, agriculture, fishing, and traditional cattle farming including cows, pigs, and sheep, are still being practiced by most inhabitants.

The animals are kept in the terraced fields, far from town. The result of their activities is excellent dairy products, especially milk and cheese, a distinctive feature of many Greek islands, as well as great vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Honey is also one of the main products of Kea, as there are many trees and bushes on the island.
