Ios Architecture

Ios island is considered a lovely sight itself with the picturesque Chora, the countless churches, traditional houses, and endless beaches. Among the most picturesque Greek islands, Ios is worth visiting for its remarkable points of interest, traditional settlements and colorful environment. The architecture of Ios is of Cycladic style, with little, whitewashed, cubic houses, flat roofs and blue windows that become one with the narrow cobbled streets, arcades and tiny white chapels.

Purple flowers that decorate the yards create a beautiful contrast with the bright whiteness that dominates the entire island. At the highest point of Chora, which is built amphitheatrically along the slopes of a hill, lies the church of Panagia Gremiotissa, from where one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. A strong reminiscence of the long presence of the Venetians is the Venetian Castle that stands on the island's highest spot, known as Paleokastro.

Part of Ios' cultural heritage is also Odysseas Elytis theatre, an open Ancient-Greek-type theater dedicated to the renowned poet. A total of 14 windmills add a final touch to the picturesque beauty of this island.

Visitors will find many hotels that have been constructed with respect to the traditional Cycladic architecture.
