Religious festivals

August 15th

August 15th is the most important religious day in Greece and the Greek islands. That day, many churches on Cyclades islands celebrate with a Holy Mass early in the morning. In the evening, a public holiday in the village square follows, where people dance together, drink wine and taste local dishes. On this day, there are panigiria on all the islands of Cyclades as there is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on every island. The largest celebrations take place in Tinos, as Virgin Mary of Tinos is considered the protector of Greece, in the church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Paros and the Monastery of Hozoviotissa in Amorgos.
