Cyclades Churches

Cycladic churches

Information about the Churches in Cyclades islands, in Greece but also information about churches and monasteries in many islands of the group: Cycladic churches are characterized for their timeless beauty with unique designs, vivid colors, and traditional style. The islands of Cyclades from one end to the other display a distinctive variety of architectural shapes and forms in both Christian and Catholic churches.

The ecclesiastical architecture of Cyclades is based on the post-Byzantine styles, meaning their austere geometrical character and simple form. Churches with flat roofs but beautiful decoration are present in many islands. Whitewashed churches with unsymmetrical shape, painted vaults and beautiful interiors are the gems of the Cycladic islands scattered amid the picturesque quarters and the lovely surroundings.

The unique Cycladic architecture of these churches is really a mixture of historical and folklore tradition. Quite often you will see the presence of many Venetian elements that witness the long-drawn presence of the Franks and the Venetians. The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is an architectural masterpiece that adorns the entire island of Amorgos whereas in Tinos there is Panagia Evagelistria, one of the most important pilgrimages in Greece.
