The Venetian Castle of Amorgos Greece, Cyclades: The 13th-century Venetian Castle of Hora was built in 1290 by Ieremias Gizis for the protection of the Amorgos Island. It is situated on the Kastro (castle) rock that stands aloft out of the village of Hora like a protector of the village. The massive rock has a height of 210 feet.
The wall of the fortress has tapered openings: Wider on the inside than on the outside, they were used to fire on the attackers. The entrance of the fortress is still seen with its low gate. The castle offers a magnificent view of the entire village and beyond. This castle is well worth a visit but a hard climb up.
