Location: Chora

An island of spirituality and purity, Amorgos is famous for its wonderful chapels that dot the countryside, from one side of the island to the other. These chapels have a peaceful atmosphere and are surrounded by gorgeous nature, with wild mountainsides, sparse greenery and blue sky that dominate the Cyclades. Such a lovely chapel is the church of Agios Georgios Valsamitis in Amorgos, spotted on the southern side of the island.

Built in the 17th century, this small church is a dependency of Hozoviotissa Monastery. Located about 4.5 km south of Chora, on the way to Kamari and Arkesini, Agios Georgios Valsamitis stands on top of a hill, overlooking the valley beneath and the sea.

The chapel is white-washed and has a paved courtyard. Inside, the atmosphere is so solemn, with beautiful icons and a lovely iconostasis. It is a three-aisled basilica with an arched roof and a tall bell tower. Right next to the church lies an old watermill.

Opening hours: Monday and Wednesday to Saturday: 09:00 - 13:00 & 17:00 - 19:00, Tuesday: 09:00 - 19:00 and Sunday: 09:00 - 13:00.
To enter the temple it is necessary for women to wear a long skirt and blouse and for men to wear long trousers and a blouse. There is no entrance fee.
