The Museum of Contemporary Art is housed in a Venetian building in the heart of the Old Town, near the Fortezza and the Archaeological Museum.
This historic building functioned as one of the island’s very first industrial installations at the beginning of the 20th century and was a soap factory till the 1970s when it was purchased by the Municipality of Rethymno. In 1992, it was converted into the Municipal Art Gallery "L. Kanakakis" and, over the years, it has been unified with the neighboring buildings to create a modern high-standard museum covering an area of 1,000 square meters. Its original Venetian and industrial structure has been retained on the inside, while works have also been carried out to make it accessible to people with mobility impairment.
The original collection has been enriched, mainly through donations by the artists themselves. Today, it boasts more than 750 works of Greek contemporary art from the 1950s to the present. It covers such fields as abstract and geometric art, neo-expressionism, minimalism, sculpture, conceptualism, photography and computer-processed art.
The Museum is also active in housing numerous temporary exhibitions in collaboration with Greek and foreign institutions. Guided tours are available on a daily basis, while ceramics and painting workshops are organized for both adults and children.
