The port of Rethymno is situated on the northern coast of the Rethymno prefecture, right next to the Venetian port of the main city and it is within walking distance from the Old Town and the city center. Its eastern part receives cruise ships and ferries, while the western part is reserved for commercial use.

Though Rethymno is the third largest Cretan city after Heraklion Town and Chania Town, very few ferries operate from the port of Rethymno and mostly in the summer season.
In fact, the port is connected only with Athinios Port in Santorini on a weekly basis via high-speed ferries run by Seajets.

 

Transportation options

KTEL Buses

For those traveling on a budget, public buses (KTEL) are the best way to move around. The terminal station lies within 1 km from the port and the well-organized bus service connects Rethymno Town with the most beautiful destinations of the prefecture, as well as with Heraklion, Lassithi and Chania. Taxis

Another option is to get a taxi. Though more expensive than taking the bus, taxis are a fast and more flexible way to get to your destination. Bear in mind that the longer the ride is, the higher the price will be. Taxis can easily be found in every central spot of Rethymno, but pre-arranged private transfers are always better than looking for a taxi, as availability may be limited during the summer season.
