Water Taxis in Lassithi

Water taxis are a fun and quick way to access magnificent beaches and islets near the coasts of Lassithi, such as Spinalonga, Chrissi, and Koufonisi. Such vessels usually start operating routes around May, when the weather is more favorable, and, during the summer months, itineraries are more frequent. Around October, when the weather conditions no longer allow it, their operation discontinues.

They are the best way to get to the historic Spinalonga island, which was originally settled and fortified by the Venetians and later functioned as a leper colony from the beginning till the middle of the 20th century. There are several boat tour operators that offer daily trips to the island from the town of Agios Nikolaos, while boat cooperatives also operate in Elounda and Plaka. The trip takes about 20-30 minutes, and boats depart every 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased in advance through a tour operator or at the departure points.

Water taxis also take visitors to the volcanic Chrissi island (Gaidouronisi), a Mediterranean gem characterized by exotic turquoise waters, golden-sanded beaches and a protected cedar forest. As the island is a wildlife refuge, disembarking is not allowed; nevertheless, boats anchor at a leeward spot where visitors can enjoy a dip in Chrissi’s crystalline waters. They depart from Ierapetra on a daily basis between April and October and the crossing takes around 1 hour. Timetables may change depending on the season, so it is recommended to contact the tour operators ahead of time.

Set against the backdrop of the Libyan Sea, the little-known Koufonisi (or Lefki) is another destination with lovely beaches, caves and dazzling bays. Like Chrissi, it is a NATURA 2000 protected area, while locals often call it the “Delos of Crete” on account of the antiquities that have been discovered there. Water taxis for Koufonisi depart from both Ierapetra and Makrigialos.
