Selakano Forest lies on the southeastern part of Mount Dikti in the Lassithi region, about 35 km north of Ierapetra. This natural haven features one of the most diverse ecosystems on the island and is protected under the Natura 2000 program. The forest is mostly dominated by the pinus brutia, a species of pine tree that is tolerant to droughts and can grow in a variety of rocks and soils. Oak, cypress, maple, plane, pear, and sage trees make up the rest of the forest, affording the area a uniquely rich collection of flora.
The forest is the investing ground of a few bird species that can be seen soaring over the trees, including birds of prey like hawks and vultures. The area of the forest known as Melissokipos (Bee Garden) is home to numerous bees, especially during the spring. Because of this, Selakano is one of the most important apicultural spots in Crete and sees many beekeepers throughout the island. In the past, the forest had also been a bustling center for wood and resin harvesting.
Visitors of Selakano Forest are sure to be enchanted by its gorgeous natural ambiance characterized by lush vegetation, ravines, gorges, gurgling springs, and streams. The area is also fairly secluded as it is surrounded by the four highest peaks of the Lassithi range, thus providing a serene and quiet atmosphere. The forest offers multiple hiking options, with several routes taking you through this wonderful natural expanse. Notably, the E4 European long-distance path, which passes through some of the most beautiful landscapes throughout Europe, also crosses the Forest of Selakano.
