The Gorge of the Dead in Lassithi Crete: Towering over to a height of 350 meters, rocks and mountain faces mark the Gorge of the Dead. The Gorge starts at the village of Zakros and continues all the way till the wonderful bay of Minoan Palace. The rock faces of the gorge contain a number of caves, which were used as burial grounds during the Minoan period and this has led the gorge to obtain the name Gorge of the Dead.

It takes about 2to 2,5 hours to travel through the gorge. The route is incredible as it allows you to take in the beautiful landscape of the valley. The gorge is of major significance to ancient Minoan history and is considered a sacred place. This, however, does not change the fact that the valley offers many beautiful and breathtaking trails for those interested in a bit of trekking or hiking. At the bay of Kato Zakros, there is also a variety of great taverns.
