General information

Twelve kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos and near the Peninsula of Spinalonga lies a small island named Kolokitha. Opposite the island, the quaint little beach of Agios Loukas, better known as Kolokitha Beach, resides.

Given its small size and fairly secluded nature, Kolokitha Beach offers little when it comes to amenities. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas available and visitors should make sure to arrive well prepared, with a trip to the stores of the nearby area of Elounda always being a safe option for getting any necessary supplies.

Where Kolokitha Beach shines, however, is in its humble, but undoubtedly intoxicating beauty. It boasts rich turquoise waters that run clear and fine white sand on its shore. The waves are mostly calm and ideal for a leisurely morning swim, while the smattering of tamarisk trees offers some nice shady spots. Surrounded by lush greenery and offering a more intimate experience away from the fuss of much bigger beach resorts, this hidden Cretan gem is a must-visit for anyone traveling to the island for the first time.
