The aqueduct of Agia Irini is an impressive structure that used to play an essential role in the everyday lives of the residents of the area.
It was built during the Egyptian Occupation period (1830–1840) when the Egyptians discovered the ancient aqueduct of Knossos. They cleaned, restored, and extended it, building their own aqueduct on it. After it was finished, it was used to transfer water from the Fountana Spring to Kounavi Village, from Miliara Spring to Skalani Village, and from there to Heraklion Center.
Today, thanks to its lovely location amidst trees, it is a pleasant stop to do during your hike in the area!
