Reformation of the Old Town

• Category: News
It's been more than ten years since the Heraklion Association of Architects was asking for the approval of a new reformation plan for the Old Town of Heraklion. The Medieval part of Heraklion remains till today a great architectural beauty and importance but it needs to be protected from the modern times. The regulatory plan for the Old Town was approved in 1936 and since then, no other newer plan has been accepted by the Municipality. The building plan of 1936, however, is destructive for the traditional character of the Old Town, as it allows old buildings to be pulled down in order to build new ones, make streets or construct public works. The Heraklion Association of Architects stresses the need to protect this familiar and lovely neighbourhood that presents the historical and cultural identity of the town and Crete, in general.
