The new excavations of the Venetian Gate Voltone will start soon in the town of Heraklion, Crete. The old gate was found under the modern street of August 25th in the early 1990s during the works for the installation of a draining channel. However, there was no care by the authorities and the monument was buried again. Now, the local authorities are planning to excavate the whole gate and to put glass surfaces so that visitors can see it from above. Gate Voltone was built by the Venetians to connect the old Arab-Byzantine town with the suburbs of Heraklion, when the settlement started to expand.
