Heraklion Kazantzakis Theater

The Theater of Nikos Kazantzakis in Heraklion, in Crete: Kazantzakis garden theatre, also called Oasis, is located at the park near the New Gate. The first time Oasis functioned as a theatre was during World War II. It was small and not many performances were held back then. Post that, until 1963, the place was used solely for political assembly meetings. After 1963, efforts were made to establish it as a summer theatre which continued till 1976.

In 1976, more changes were made and the theatre became what it is today, a modern open theatre with 1200 seats and all the necessary amenities. The theatre offers a wide variety of programmes especially during the Heraklion festival in summer. The range of programmes held here includes theatrical performances, folk music, and dance events, lectures, opera, and art exhibitions.
