General information

The secluded beach of Martsalos lies near the southern side of the Messara Plain, about 80 kilometers southwest of Heraklion. Protected by a gorgeous mountain range, the beach is fully isolated, boasting an untamed natural environment and an unconventional charm. The shore is small and pebbly and the waters are almost always calm. The tranquility of the sea justifies the name Martsalos, which in Latin translates to Good Harbor.

Part of Martsalos’ intrigue is its untouched natural landscape, featuring no amenities like sunbeds or umbrellas. Tamarisk trees line the shore, though, offering some nice shady spots to rest under. There are no beach bars or restaurants nearby either, so beach-goers are advised to come prepared with all necessities including food and water. The serenity makes this an ideal destination for some moments of relaxation, basking in the sun, and enjoying a refreshing swim.

To reach the beach on foot, you must embark on a challenging hiking journey that will take you through some remarkable environments, including the beautiful Martsalos Gorge. About 2 kilometers in length, the gorge will take you through a myriad of interesting rock formations and enchanting caves. To access the gorge, follow the dirt road starting from the Odigitria Monastery until you see a sign that reads “Martsalo”. Alternatively, you can take a small boat from Matala, Agia Galini, and Kokkinos Pyrgos that will get you right to the shore.
