Mosques and minarets were founded during the Turkish occupation, most of which are present even to this day. Many of them are now have taken over a different role, as they are used for cultural purposes. Crete bears the co-existence of many religious dogmas.

Being under the Venetian occupation for 400 years (13th - 14th century) Crete has been the ideal place for the foundation of many Catholic churches and medieval castles, whereas Orthodox churches can be found to a much lesser degree. Crete has strong influences from the Byzantine period as well where churches are usually decorated with many frescoes and wall paintings. Crete will take you on a long journey back in time.
