Chania Akrotiri

General information

The Akrotiri peninsula lies 10 km northeast of Chania Τown, close to the International Airport of Chania, and it is famous for its long history and heritage. However, Akrotiri is mostly known for having provided the setting for the world-famous syrtaki that Anthony Quinn danced in Zorba the Greek.

The area boasts imposing medieval monasteries like Gouverneto, Agia Triada Tzangarolon and Saint John the Merciful at Pazinos, while other notable monuments include the Venizelos Tombs. 

Around Akrotiri, you will find plenty of accommodation options, as well as the seaside settlement of Kalathas, which has a beautiful sandy beach with crystalline waters.

Another worth-visiting place is Stavros Beach, where, apart from the soft sand and the clear waters, visitors can admire Lera Cave, a Neolithic cave that was used as a sanctuary from the Bronze Period onwards. Near the Gouverneto Monastery, you can also find Arkoudospilio Cave, which boasts an impressive stalagmite that looks like a bear.
