The 7 villages of Apokoronas

General Description

On this tour you will explore the unique area of Apokoronas, which is the East province of Chania Region. Leaving Chania you will have the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery into the mountains while making our way across Cretan villages like Stylos, Tsivaras and Kalives. First stop ar Gavalochori village where we visit the folklore museum of Apokoronas. The museum has 7 rooms of which reveal everything about history, handcrafts and the everyday life of the people.

Leaving Gavalochori, driving towards “Xirosterni” you will visit the local family “Raki” distillery, where you will watch the whole Raki production from the beginning and taste of course this delicious unique Cretan spirit drink. Leaving the distillery our next stop is Vrises, where you will enjoy the view of the river and the square.

Next stop is the village of Emprosneros whre you will visit the theatre of the wold known composer Mikis Thodorakis, as well as the hidden church of St. Antony, built on the rock. Following you will experience the Cretan cheese-making process, as you visit a cheese factory and taste the local “Graviera” “Mizithra” or “Anthotiros” cheese varieties. You will also taste some olive oil on warm bread, cookies and Cretan biscuits in the local bakery.

After that you will enjoy lunch in a traditional “kafeneio” in Fres village, have a chat with the locals and learn about the countryside way of life. You will have the chance to see the pure beauty and feel the real Crete around you.
