The Gorge of Deliana-Mesavlia is located 37 km from Chania, about one hour from the town by car. It is an amazing option for beginner hikers or families with children since it is 5 km long and it only takes approximately 1 hour to cross it.
Although Deliana Gorge has not become as popular as other gorges of Crete, it is truly beautiful and worth visiting if you enjoy spending time exploring nature. It is a verdant area, full of dense greenery, trees and flowers you don't typically encounter often in other parts of Crete.
The gorge is a great destination for those interested in birdwatching, as it offers the opportunity to see vultures and other birds. Cretan goats, lizards and other small animals are also among the inhabitants of the gorge.
Along the way, you will get to see two small chapels; one of them is dedicated to Agia Paraskevi and the other one to Agios Fotios.
For the most part of the route, you will be walking alongside a river that sometimes floods during the winter, altering the dirt paths.
It is highly recommended that you visit the gorge during the spring, when nature is as beautiful as it gets. This is also the safest time of the year weather-wise, since there are no heavy rainfalls to cause the stream to flood.
You can enter the gorge both from Deliana and Mesavlia villages. At both entrances, you will find a potable water fountain and a car parking area.
