The construction of the new Archaeological Museum of Chania is going to start soon and the whole process is expected to last for about 2 years. The Archaeological Museum of Chania, which is now housed in a Franciscan monastery on Chalidon street, will be transfered in the historical neighbourhood of Chalepa, in the old Chatzidakis camp. It will cover an area of 6,500 sq.m. and will include exhibition halls, skywalks, galleries, an amphitheatre and various support rooms. The architect of this new museum is Theofanis Bobotis, who also designed the new Archaeological Museum of Patras. In his architectural plans, he made the museum 6 to eight metres tall and designed rooms as wide as 15. He has said that his aim is to build a museum modern and multifunctional, with an ability to present all the existing artifacts in his rooms and even provide with new rooms in case more exhibits will be found in archaeological excavations.
