The Municipality of Chania has decided to submit its candidature to include the Old Town of Chania in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage. Following the example of the Old Towns of Corfu and Rhodes, which have already been included in the list, the municipality of Chania has composed a group out of local authorities, with the vice major of the town as president of the group, to draft the nominee file that will be deposited in UNESCO. The Old Town of Chania, built on the site of Ancient Calydonia, has been declared as a historically-preserved monument and impresses visitors with its Byzantine and Venetian walls, the narrow paths, the elegant 17th century manions, the Christian and Muslim monuments. The symbol of Chania Old Town is certainly the Venetian Lighthouse that dominates the harbor.
