The department of the Technical Chamber of Greece in Western Crete proposed the island of Gavdos to be turned into the first "green" island in Greece, thus into an island that will depend totally on environmental friendly energies, such as aeolian and solar energy. After the decision of the Greek government to create a "green island" in Greece, following the example of Samso island in Danemark, many small Greek islands, such as Nisyros, Tilos and Agios Efstratios, are submitting their candidatures. Gavdos, particularly, is a small island to the south of Chania and in fact it is the southernmost point of Greece and Europe. It has only 98 permanent inhabitants and its extension is no larger than 37 sq.m. It is connected to Crete with boats to Chora Sfakion.
