General information

Gavalochori Chania: Gavalochori is a traditional settlement, part of Apokoronos area and lies about 26 km south-east of Chania Town. Several interesting samples of folk architecture are found in the village and most of the inhabitants deal with agriculture and produce olive oil figs, almonds and honey.

Gavalochori seems untouched by tourism and retains a great part of its traditional and authentic character. Around the village you will see beautiful stone-built houses, white paved streets, flowered gardens and lovely churches. In Gavalochori women have a long tradition in needling kopaneli, a technique of lace needling that dates from the Byzantine times.

In Gavalochori, there are two important churches that date from the 16th century, the church of the Virgin Mary and the church of Agios Sergios. There is also a folklore museum with interesting and valuable exhibits, including folk costumes, old coins, weaponry, old furniture and other items of daily use. In close distance are the popular tourist resorts of Chania, such as Almyrida, Georgioupoli and Kalyves.
