Attica Churches

Attica churches

Information about the Churches in Attica, in Greece but also information about churches and monasteries in Athens: Like every region of Greece, the peninsula of Attica is spread with many churches, chapels, and few monasteries. Most churches are found in the town and suburbs of Athens, including the famous church of Panagia Kapnikarea, Agios Georgios on Lycabettus hill and Agia Marina in Thission.

However, a drive outside Athens will bring you to many small chapels by the sea or on top of hills. These chapels open only on special occasions, such as in important religious days, for wedding or baptism ceremonies.

Important monasteries in the region of Attica are the Byzantine Monastery of Kaisariani, established in the 13th century AD and the Byzantine Monastery of Daphni established as early as the 6th century AD.

Other monasteries in the region of Attica are the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin in Markopoulo Oropos, the Monastery of Saint Ephraim in Nea Makri and the Monastery of Saint Symeon in Kalamos. These monasteries and usually all working monasteries in Greece are open on scheduled times and certainly every Sunday morning after the Holy Mass.
