Athens Hiking

If you thought that Athens is all about sightseeing and delicious greek food but not an ideal destination for exciting activities like hiking, now is the time to reconsider. Whether a hiking fanatic or simply a curious wanderer, note that Athens is surrounded by four major mountains that create the so-called “basin of Attica”, providing excellent opportunities for any exploring-related activities.

The Mountain of Parnitha is located at the northern part of the city and is a place of exquisite natural beauty. Overgrown slopes, many marked hiking routes and rare flora and fauna create an idyllic, inviting scenery. Both amateur and professional teams frequently organise hiking events and explore the hidden beauties, while the route from the Mont Parnes Hotel to the Bafi refuge is ideal for beginners.
Hymettus is another mountain that constitutes a hiker’s heaven; easily accessible by the neighborhood of Zografou, there are several roads to take you up in the mountain through the gates of the university campus. The lush pine forest and the dazzling view to the sea from the top will amaze you, while there also a few facilities where visitors can rest and enjoy a snack or refreshment.

In case you prefer coastal destinations, the National Park in Sounio is an excellent choice that starts off the village of Agios Constantinos and will guide you through the notorious Chaos gluch, ancient mines and ruins of later ones as well as historic caves - leading you to the famous Temple of Poseidon, known for some of the best sunsets in Greece.

For those who love mesmerising views but do not wish to spend hours exercising, there are intown hills that in less than an hour offer a great hiking experience. The Lycabettus and Philopappos Hill (accessible from the downtown regions of Kolonaki and Thissio respectively) offer routes of medium difficulty as well as incredible views to the city and sea that unfold before your eyes.
