Brief History of Technopolis

In 1857, the gasworks of Athens were founded, in order to light the capital. It was in operation until 1984 when it closed.
Fifteen years later, in 1999, the first cultural and art events were hosted on the premises of the old gasworks and Technopolis was established as a cultural venue.

In 2013, the Industrial Gas Museum was founded within the space, in order to promote the architectural, historical, technological, and social importance of the factory.

Lastly, in 2016, the two gasholders of the old plant were lit and illuminated the area, while a watchtower was established in a new watergas building. The first bike rental station in Athens (called Athens Bikes) was also established that year.
