The Jewish Museum of Athens: The Jewish Museum of Greece is placed on 39, Nikis St, near Syntagma square. It was founded in 1979 and was originally housed in a 19th-century building, from which just its exterior walls remain today. The museum has now been transferred to a modern building which can fulfill its requirements and needs. The architecture of this modern building is very interesting. Its levels are arranged around a central octagonal ladder that runs till the height of the building. It also has a glass dome that allows natural light to come inside.
The Jewish Museum hosts about 8,000 items that show the long presence of Jews in Greece. In fact, Jews have been living in Greece for 2,300 years and have created many Jewish institutions. The museum hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions, a research library, a gift shop, and a video room.
The ground floor of the museum hosts the interior of the Synagogue of Patras. In the museum, you will also see religious artifacts, representations of celebrations, photographs, medals and pieces of weapon to show the participation of the Jews in the Greek War of Independence, documents and clothes from the Nazi concentration camps, traditional costumes from the everyday life and objects related to circumcision, marriage and death. The museum also organizes frequent lectures and educational seminars about the Jewish communities of Greece.
