Location: Syntagma Don't miss: Museums guide (free admission dates and other useful info)
The Jewish Museum of Greece is located near Syntagma Square. It was founded in 1979 and was originally housed in a 19th-century building, from which just its exterior walls remain today.
The museum has now been transferred to a modern building which can fulfill its requirements and needs. The architecture of this modern building is very interesting. Its levels are arranged around a central octagonal ladder. It also has a glass dome that allows natural light to come inside.

The Jewish Museum hosts thousands of items that show the long presence of Jews in Greece. In fact, Jews have been living in Greece for 2,300 years and have created many Jewish institutions. The museum hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions, a research library, a gift shop, and a video room.
The ground floor hosts the interior of the Synagogue of Patra. In the museum, you can admire religious artifacts, representations of celebrations, photographs, medals and pieces of weapons that show the participation of the Jews in the Greek War of Independence, documents and clothes from the Nazi concentration camps, traditional costumes from the everyday life and objects related to circumcision, marriage and death.
The museum also organizes frequent lectures and educational seminars about the Jewish communities of Greece.
Permanent Collections
The permanent exhibition of the Jewish Museum features over 10,000 objects, with the oldest ones dating back to the 16th century CE (or AD). They are organized based on thematic sections, with each section presenting a specific subject or era.
More specifically, the permanent collections include: • Synagogal Artifacts and Ritual Textiles (Ground Floor) • Jewish Holidays (Level 1) • History of the Greek Jews (Level 2) • Shoah (Holocaust) Area (Level 4) • Costumes (Level 5) • Everyday Life and the Cycle of Life (Level 6)
Level 4 serves as a venue for video projections. A venue for temporary exhibitions is also part of the museum's structure.
The Jewish Museum of Greece is open every day except for Saturdays.
From Monday to Friday, the museum is open from 09:00 to 14:30, while on Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00.
