The Greeks take over the Oscars

• Category: News

Yesterday’s announcement of the Oscar nominations’ list for 2017 delighted cinema enthusiasts worldwide - and made Greeks a bit more proud than usual. In the anticipated ceremony that will take place on February 26th, there will be four Greek nominees that will compete for the precious golden statue.
The upcoming director and screenwriter Yorgos Lanthimos is nominated along with his collaborator Efthimis Filippou on the category “Best original screenplay” for their film “The Lobster”, the indie romantic drama that caused worldwide sensation earlier in 2016. This is not  Lanthimos’ first oscar nomination, as his film “Dogtooth” was among the five selected films in the “Best foreign-language film” category a few years ago.
The moving documentary “4.1 Miles” by director Daphne Matziaraki has also granted her a nomination in the “Best short documentary” category, capturing the story of the immigrant crisis from the point of a Greek coast guard.
Finally, acclaimed costume designer Mary Zophres is nominated for her elaborate creations in the successful film “La La Land” that dazzled audience and critics alike.
We could not be more excited to watch this year’s ceremony and we sincerely wish all nominees a great luck!
