Nov 01, 2008 — Nov 01, 2008 • Category: Events
The 26th Athens Classic Marathon will be held on Sunday, November 9th. The athletes will have the chance to run the actual, historical route that starts from the area of Marathon, 40km to the north east of Athens, and ends in Kallimarmaro Stadium, in the centre of the city. The Classic Marathon, as the Olympic Marathon Race, is organized to commemorate the historical route run by an Athenian soldier in 490 B.C. The soldier Pheidippides ran 40 km from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to carry the joyful message that the Greeks won the battle over the Persians. When the soldier announced the message, he passed away of tiredness. Apart from the Marathon route, the organization includes races of 5 and 10 km.
