Journey to the Greek Sea in Benaki Museum

The photo exhibition Greek Seas: A photographic journey through time was inaugurated last evening in Benaki Museum, Athens. The exhibition will take place from October 10th, 2013 till January 5th, 2014 in the Pireos Street Annexe of the museum.

The theme of this interesting exhibition is the connection of Greece to the Sea. Through approximately 350 photographs, the exhibition runs the history of the Greek land and the strong connection of inhabitants to the sea that surrounds the country and has never stopped inspiring Greek artists and poets. Following the invention of photography in the mid 19th century to this date, photographic images depicting Greek seascapes have been added to the painted representations of the same topic.

The photographs have been divided into 5 chronological groups: the second half of the 19th century, the first decades of the 20th century, the interwar years, the post WWII years, and the age after the fall the junta till present day. This exhibition is organized in the framework of Athens Photo Festival 2013.
