Exhibition for Athens 180 years Greek capital

The Municipal Art Gallery of Athens, celebrating the 100 years since its inauguration and the 180 years of Athens as capital of Greece, is hosting the exhibition Athens 180 years capital of the Greek State. The exhibition is dedicated to artists who depicted and re-imagined Athens through their work and is taking place at the recently renovated building of the Municipal Gallery at Koumoundourou square, Pireos Street.
The exhibition, that is actually the first exhibition to take place in the historical building of Athens Municipal Gallery after its renovation, will last until May 31st, 2015.
Works of local and foreign artists are displayed in this exhibition. More than a hundred art pieces, including paintings, engravings and sculptures, are exhibited, presenting the interesting past and daily life in this city through different artistic scopes. The display will be divided into 5 thematic sections: Decoration of the Town Hall, Athenian landscape-Archaeological sites, Daily life-History, Figures and Sculpture.
Through the works of famous artists, such as Ernst Chiller, Georgios Iakovides, , Theophil Hansen, Konstantinos Parthenis, Nikos Hatzikiriakos-Gkikas and Fotis Kontoglou among others, visitors are invited to explore the connection of the city’s past with the present and discover the vision behind the creation of this historical capital, symbol of Greek culture.
