The Cultural Capital of Europe institution was established by Melina Mercouri back in 1985; ever since it has constituted a prominent cultural event in Europe, contributing to the sustainable development of the cities that host it. In 2023, it is Elefsina's turn to join the family of the European Cultural Capitals along with Timisoara in Romania and Veszprem in Hungary.
Inspired by Elefsina's rich historical and cultural heritage, an integrated educational, artistic, and research program has been formed, called "Mysteries of Transition". That includes a total of 465 productions taking place in 30 different indoor and outdoor areas of the city. All mysteries focus on three main axes: Human | Society, Environment, and Work, and aim to reflect the modern struggles both Elefsina and the whole of Europe face.
The opening ceremony comprises the official launch of the artistic program and will take place on February 4th, 2023. Throughout the day, the city will celebrate with numerous parties, concerts, exhibitions, and various events.
