CineFix 2024

Jun 21, 2024 — Oct 04, 2024 • Category: Events
Location: Fix

Set in the former Fix Brewery in central Athens, the National Museum of Contemporary Arts (EMST) has exhibited all types of Greek and international art since its opening in 2015. Now, it is gearing up to delve deeper into the rich artistry of the film world by transforming its rooftop into a remarkable summer cinema named CineFIX.

The rooftop of the museum is without a doubt an advantageous location for such an endeavor. Located in the heart of Athens, it offers a stunning view of the entire city, including the Acropolis. Such a setting is sure to delight audiences and provide a uniquely beautiful background and a whole new context in which these audiovisual pieces of art can be appreciated.

Beginning on Friday, June 21 at 21:30, the cinema will hold a screening of all of Penny Siopis' films, currently featured in an exhibition at the museum named For Dear Life. Born in South Africa in 1953 to Greek parents, Siopis first rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s with her revolutionary paintings, touching on topics such as colonialism, racism and sexism. She went on to experiment with other media including, of course, film. Siopis’ films consist of found 8mm and 16mm home-movies, stitched together into larger-narrative stories that place the characters’ lives in the context of broader social and political issues. All while providing enthralling insights into the personal struggles and social ramifications that come from the world’s harrowing realities, as well as her own Greek and South African roots and experiences.

Seven of Penny Siopis’ films will be shown during the screening, for a total runtime of 75 minutes. Afterward, the artist will be present for a Q&A session. The summer screenings will run throughout the summer until the beginning of October, taking place every second Thursday of the month. Admission is 2 euros at the EMST ticket desk.
