The Ancient Civilizations of Basilicata Exhibition
The Acropolis Museum presents the exhibition “The Ancient Civilizations of Basilicata. Treasures Emerging to Light” in its Temporary Exhibition Gallery. Set to run until January 26, 2025, this exhibition is part of the “Il racconto della bellezza” program and has been touring Italian Cultural Institutes worldwide since 2023.
This exhibition showcases the ancient history of the region of Basilicata in southern Italy. It specifically focuses on the civilization of the area from the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age, spanning from the 11th to the 6th century BC. With over 300 artifacts on display, visitors have the chance to delve deep into the vibrant world of ancient Basilicata as well as the influence that the Greeks and the Lucanians had over the region’s cultural identity. The collection of items includes vases, tableware, jewelry, cooking utensils, and various artistic works.
The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Culture in Italy and the General Directorate of Museums, with the National Museums of Matera, the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Basilicata, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Italy. It is also supported by the Embassy of Italy in Greece and the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens, in collaboration with the Acropolis Museum. The exhibition catalog is available in Greek, Italian, and English and admission is free.
