In order to honour the 400 years since the death of the famous Greek artist Dominikos Theotokopoulos, commonly known as El Greco, the Benaki Museum in Athens is organizing two exhibitions dedicated to this great Renaissance painter.

The first, entitled Friends and Patrons of El Greco in Toledo will be held at the main building starting from November 13th, 2014. The second exhibition, entitled Domenikos Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome, will take place at the building of Pireos Street from November 21st, 2014. Both exhibitions take place until March 1st, 2015.

The first exhibition will present important archive material, authentic manuscripts and books, associated with the supporters of El Greco's career, while he was living in Toledo. The focus is given on the intellectuals, collectors and patrons who inspired and helped him develop his art. The archive material is contributed by the Archives of Toledo and Madrid and the National Library of Spain. The exhibition will also display four portraits of El Greco.

The exhibition Domenikos Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome shows the beginning of El Greco’s journey as an artist in Venice and his early years in Rome. Paintings, engravings and authentic manuscripts will be on display, including El Greco's relatively unknown painting A Boy Blowing a Candle, exhibited for the first time in Greece.
