More about the clubs
Athens’ nightlife is what sets it apart from most cities in Greece and many of the world’s capitals! The city’s vibrant rhythm and never-ending parties mean there is not a day in the calendar when you would be sitting at home in Athens. One important aspect of its incredible nightlife is the city’s nightclubs.
Locals and visitors of Athens have a huge selection of nightclubs, depending on the season and the type of music they want to listen to. Most nightclubs are usually full, especially during holidays and weekends, so you better make a reservation before you visit them!
In certain clubs, you can also listen to specific types of music. Some only feature Greek music, others mesh modern Greek and English songs, and some even play specific genres such as techno or hip-hop.
Types of Clubs
Winter Clubs
Winter nightclubs are the most common in Athens. There are very few areas in Athens where there is not a single form of a winter club, however big or small. They usually operate from October until May, because of the heat during the summer months. The most known winter nightclubs are mostly packed and filled with dancing Athenians, under the strobing lights.
Some of the most impressive Athenian nightclubs are situated in or near the center of the city. More specifically, two of the busiest districts in Athens are Gazi and Syntagma. Our recommendations are Lohan Nightclub in Kerameikos and Dybbuk in Syntagma, owing to their respective dance and house tunes!
Seaside Clubs
Seaside Clubs possess certain key differences from winter nightclubs. While incredible light shows, upbeat dance music and the occasional live performance are some similarities between the two, seaside clubs differ in their location and venues. Because they operate strictly in the summer, they are usually near the beach. They are open-roof spaces that offer refreshing drinks and the chance to party from sunset to sunrise! Some of them are also located on rooftops, so you can enjoy the incredible views of the city under the summer sun.
These seaside clubs can be found on the Athens Riviera or Poseidonos Avenue, with our picks being Bolivar Bar in Alimos and Island Club in Varkiza.
Bouzoukia
Bouzoukia is a Greek specialty, not often found outside the country. This nightclub’s name is derived from the word, bouzouki, meaning a type of Greek lute, used to play traditional music. The bouzoukia are large venues with a big stage, usually two-storied, that host some of Greece’s and Athens’ finest popular music artists. The music you will hear there is strictly Greek, more specifically a genre called laika, meaning popular or folk music. The people visiting these nightclubs are ready and willing to dance until morning, sing their hearts out and throw some flowers at whoever is on stage, a common practice in Bouzoukia!
One certain distinctiveness of Bouzoukia is also the fact that each year or season different artists and groups of artists may appear. Each year there is always something new! Some of our favorite and most impressive venues include Votanikos Live Stage in Votanikos (near Gazi) and Enastron in Tavros.
Hidden clubs
We mentioned some of Athens’ most well-known and flamboyant nightclubs. But some of them need to be discovered! Hidden clubs, namely clubs that on the outside do not look at all like typical nightclubs, are a common occurrence in the streets of Athens. These clubs are hidden from plain sight behind a quiet bar or even the doors of apartment complexes, in order to avoid becoming mainstream or to evade potential noise complaints from nearby residents. Some of them are even hidden in basements and only open on specific occasions. Nevertheless, once you find them, you will be able to accompany your night out with an achievement that even some Athenians have not completed yet!
Our not-so-secret picks of hidden clubs are both located in Syntagma. These include Rumble in the Jungle, with its exotic cocktail selection, and EKEI, a fascinating two-storey building that features different music on each floor!
Discos
Visitors to Athens are more familiar with the concept of Disco, however, it is worth mentioning. Greek Disco evolved around the same period as American Disco, but it feels much different. It has its own specific rhythm and meaning, and those who miss it or want to know what it was all about can still experience it today!
We recommend Vinilio in Gazi and Barbarella in Syggrou, dubbed as the last original Greek disco, for their groovy beats and old discotheque decor!
