General information

Syntagma Neighborhood in Athens: Syntagma (Constitution) Square is the heart of modern Athens and the city's most popular meeting point.
Bustling with life, the square faces the Hellenic Parliament, the impressive palace that used to be the residence of King Otto.
The soldiers known as Evzones stand in front of the aristocratic building, guarding the Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and performing ceremonial duties while wearing a traditional Greek uniform. The changing of the guard taking place every hour in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences guests can attend and admire.

Many major Athenian landmarks are located in proximity to Syntagma and so are the most picturesque neighborhoods of Athens - Plaka, Monastiraki, Psiri, Thissio and Mets.
Near the square, you will discover historic buildings such as Zappeion, old churches and the National Garden. Moreover, majestic ancient monuments like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Arch of Hadrian, as well as some museums, including the Cycladic Art Museum and the Historical Museum, are located in the square's vicinity.

    Fascinating to watch

This is fascinating to watch. The soldiers’ control and professionalism are testimony to the hours of training they must undergo to give such a flawless performance.

    Magnificent garden
The National Garden is one of the most fresh and shadowy places that you can find in the center of Athens, filled with lush greenery, colorful flowers and several species of birds. We spent half a day walking around and exploring this magnificent environment and I noticed two lakes with ducks and a small zoo with many children around it.

Next to the zoo there is a lovely coffee shop called "The Garden". I ordered a cool drink and sat in one of these small tables that fit only two people and enjoyed the magic, almost divine atmosphere. It's strange to think that this place is actually in the heart of Athens. Even the air you breathe is different.

After an hour or so, I continued my wondering and saw some ancient monuments and mosaics. In the north side of the garden you will find busts of great Greek poets. You can spend many hours wondering around especially if you like a nature lover. If you sit somewhere near the ducks, they will approach you to ask for food.

The Garden is open for the public till sunset. A nice spot to relax in between the sightseeings and right next to the impressive building of Zappio.

    The safe city centre
Indeed Syntagma is the centre of Athens. Everything, from restaurants to theatres, museums and ancient sites are only a walking distance away from Syntagma. Of course, the subway is also a great help. Best subway I've used in Europe, large clean trains, security people and timetables every 5 min. Every time in Athens, we choose a hotel in Syntagma. I know that most people are headed to Omonoia, but this is a very dangerous spot of Athens, so better avoid it, especially at night. Syntagma is a short walk from the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki down the shopping street of Ermou and the beautiful National Gardens.

How can there be such a green spot in the centre of a large busy town like Athens. Once you enter the gardens, you no longer hear the noise of the cars but birds singing and the water sound of the small lakes all over. A great place for botanologists, as it has so many plant species from around the world. After a long morning walk in the gardens, we usually have coffee in Zappeio and then we head to the museums. Visiting the museums is our favorite activity in Athens, as fortunately the city has lots.

    For a coffee before sightseeing
When I say Zappeio, I think of the impressive building of Neoclassical style that stands behind Syntagma and the National Gardens. A really impressive building and if you go closer and see through the glass door, it also has an impressive patio inside. Conferences and exhibitions take place there. Too bad that this building is not open everyday, except on conference days. On the side of Zappeio, there is a statue of the man who gave the money to build it. On the other side, there is a nice cafeteria away from noise to enjoy a morning coffee before you start to explore Athens. A short walking distance behind this cafeteria, there is the Kallimarmaro Stadium and the temple of Zeus. That's the good thing with Athens: most places you have to see are only a short walk away one from the other.
