History of Greek Costume museum
The Museum of the History of Greek Costume in Athens: The Museum of the History of the Greek Costume offers a very pleasant experience throwing light into the lost fashions and arts of Greece. It was inaugurated in 1988 by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserve and promote Greek folk costumes from regions all over Greece and from the Greek islands.
There are over 25,000 items collected in the Museum, including men and women costumes for all occasions (daily life, weddings, funerals, special celebrations), clocks, pieces of jewelry and other unique material. These exhibits were collected in many years and come mostly from donations. The museum also takes interest in research and documentation regarding the Greek fashion from the ancient till the modern times. Some temporary exhibitions are also held.
The Museum of the History of the Greek Costume is housed in a classical mansion in Kolonaki neighborhood, close to Syntagma square. Every year, since 1990, it publishes a desktop calendar with photos of Greek folk costumes and other pieces of traditional art.
