Athens Roman Agora

The Roman Agora in Athens is located on the northern side of the Acropolis and very close to the Monastiraki Metro Station.
In fact, it is connected to the Ancient Agora in Thissio through a paved path.
Although the Ancient Agora was a place of political gatherings for the Athenians, the Roman Agora was the area's open market.

According to archaeologists, the Roman Agora was constructed in the 1st century BC and an inscription informs us that the funds were given by Julius Ceasar and Augustus.
The Roman Agora consisted of a large, open-air courtyard surrounded by colonnades on all four sides.
A series of shops was situated on the eastern side while a fountain lay on the southern side.
The main entrance was at the west, but another entrance led to the Tower of the Winds, an octagonal building used for telling the time and predicting the weather.

During the reign of Hadrian, the Roman Agora was paved with slabs and the famous Library of Hadrian was built in proximity to it.
After the invasion of Heruli in 267 AD, the Roman Agora became the commercial and administrative center of Athens.
Over the centuries, the invasions of the Venetians and the Ottomans destroyed the site and, gradually, the area was covered with houses, workshops, churches, and mosques.
Such a mosque, Fetiye Mosque, still stands next to the Roman Agora.
