Location: Paleo Faliro

Stretching from the southern suburbs of Athens to Sounion, the Athens Riviera is basically an array of organized and unorganized beaches, rocky coves, resorts and harbors, along the Saronic Gulf.

Some of the best places to visit along the Athens Riviera are the coastal areas of Faliro (Flisvos), Glyfada, Varkiza, Vouliagmeni, Anavissos and Sounio.
All these suburbs boast beautiful beaches, where you can enjoy a plunge near Athens city center.

The Riviera is very easily accessible from the center of Athens by public means of transportation (bus and tram) until a certain point.
Travelers who are interested in exploring the beauties of the more remote regions of the Athens Riviera, like Anavissos and Sounio, can do it at their own pace by renting a car.

Popular Districts of the Athens Riviera

Paleo Faliro

Until the early 20th century, Faliro was a small coastal village. Around 1915, though, a few wealthy individuals started to build noble mansions there, as they were inspired by the beach.
Later on, Faliro developed commercially because of the spread of the city center's residents toward the southern suburbs. The area is still of noticeable preference among the people of Attica.

Faliro boasts a charming marina called Flisvos Marina, where guests can enjoy a walk, a coffee, a drink, or a meal by the sea. In addition, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and Cultural Center, an old armored cruiser that now serves as the Averof Museum and the Planetarium are regional points of interest worthy of a visit!

Glyfada

Considered one of the most beautiful districts of Athens, this northern suburb is probably the most lively one! Several modern cafes, trendy restaurants and vivid bars in the area are full of life all year long, while the seaside nightclubs get really busy during the summertime.
Glyfada has plenty of well-organized beaches along its coast and is the most visited suburb of the Athens Riviera thanks to the excellent and opulent hotels that are located there.

Vouliagmeni

Vouliagmeni is home to the most renowned Place to swim in Athens - Vouliagmeni Lake. This lake is one of Attica's hidden gems, as it comprises a unique natural setting where people can swim or capitalize on the thermal waters.
Moreover, the area's coastline is a favorite among sea lovers and sports enthusiasts! Vouliagmeni Beach has azure waters and a well-equipped sandy shore with basketball, volleyball and beach volleyball courts among its amenities!

Anavissos

Anavissos is the place where dazzling waters meet palatable fish dishes! Gathering fewer people than the aforementioned regions due to its longer distance from Athens, Anavissos is the queen of fish taverns. The area has both organized and unorganized beaches, frequently visited by surfers. The small bay that is located there is the mooring place for many fishing boats that supply the local taverns with fresh fish.

Sounio

The cape of Sounio is the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula and the place where the majestic Temple of Poseidon stands. Since the monument combines an exceptional location at a high altitude with major historical significance, several tours to Sounio depart from Athens every day. Guests will also find accommodation options, including the high-end Grecotel Cape Sounion Hotel, and several lovely beaches in the wider area, like Kape Beach and Cape Sounion Beach.
