Location: Monastiraki

One of the most interesting and vibrant places you must visit during your stay in Athens is the Flea Market in Monastiraki.

It expands from Monastiraki Square and reaches Thissio and Psiri. The fuss mainly takes place around Avissinias Square where the heart of the flea market beats.

The flea market mainly consists of small brocante shops but there are also street sellers mainly gathered on Andrianou Street and around the metro station of Thissio.

At the flea market, you will encounter literally everything! From trash objects to second-hand books and clothes, old magazines, newspapers, and photos as well as valuable antiques and vintage furniture. The flea market has it all! Prices are always negotiable and feel free to bargain without regret!

Apart from the shops, you can find cafes, small Greek taverns and Asian restaurants. Be aware that some of those alleys and passages lead to beautiful secret gardens or terraces with fantastic views.

Last but not least, it is always a good and alternative idea to buy a souvenir from Greece that is beyond the ordinary and you will find plenty of them at the flea market!

Tip: If you want to experience the Flea Market at its liveliest, we suggest you visit it on a Sunday morning. That is when the large open-air market, or Yussuroum* as the locals call it, is set up.
Fun fact: The term Yussuroum derives from the second name of an antique dealer from Smyrna named Elias Yussuroum. He was the founder of the first antique shop in Monastiraki, who established his business at the end of the 19th century.
