The Municipal Gallery of Athens was founded in 2010 and is housed in a Neoclassical building in Avdi Square, Metaxourgio.
This renovated building was constructed in 1834-1835 and is one of the oldest neoclassical buildings in Athens. It was designed by the Danish architect Christian Hansen, who also created the plans for the awe-inspiring University of Athens.

The building was turned into a silk factory, which operated until 1875. In fact, the factory is the reason behind the neighborhood's name, since the Greek word for silk factory is Metaxourgio!
After many uses, such as garrison headquarters in 1944, shop and residences, the building was eventually donated to the Municipality of Athens in 1994.
In 2007, the municipality decided to start restoration works to make the old factory a cultural venue that would be able to host events.

The Municipal Gallery of Athens hosts permanent and temporary art exhibitions by renowned modern Greek artists and a few works by foreign artists. In fact, the gallery owns about 3,000 pieces, most of them created in the 19th and 20th centuries. The gallery also features an interesting collection of engravings, with works by great masters of this art, their followers and other young engravers. Also, the Municipal Gallery organizes seminars and workshops for children frequently. Admission to the Municipal Gallery of Athens is free.

The gallery welcomes guests every day except for Mondays. On Sundays, it is open from 10:00 to 16:00, while from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 19:00.
