After being plagued by two major fires just last week, fire services in on Mount Parnitha, in Pelion have been on high alert, even as new blazes had to be put out. The new fires broke out during the afternoon on Thursday, and soon spread out of control as the winds aided it. The fires reached an 8 on the Beaufort scale. The cause for the fires has still not been found, with it either being kindled by the previous fires in these areas or by arsonists.
Firefighters here were kept busy as they were summoned to put out two more blazes in Prodromos in Viotia and Kokla in Messinia. Even yesterday Thessaloniki’s fire service was kept on its toes as a huge blaze broke out in Praktiker, which is a home improvement store and is located in the municipality of Pylaia. Due to its source, which was a warehouse holding wooden products and flammable goods, the fire which is believed to have started in the early hours, soon spread immensely. It was finally brought under control and eventually extinguished yesterday evening. Once again the cause of the fire has not been found.
Citizens are very much dissatisfied with the government’s inability to protect the Mount Parnitha area as well as other Greek forestland. A protest against the government is scheduled for noon tomorrow, outside the Parliament. Three more protest rallies are set to happen tomorrow morning, beginning at the foot of Mount Parnitha.
