passed, the monasteries had several damages due to the wars that broke up, till the World War II. As a result, some of them were renovated whereas others required full reconstruction. The astonishing view of Meteora Greece to the mountains and the massive rocks captivates the visitors.
The ascetic shacks standing in the rocks witness the indisputable presence of the first monks who devoted their life to God. The descent to the monasteries of Meteora Greece was not easy. Today the pilgrims use staircases cut into the rocks assuring a safe access to the monasteries. Although there were originally 24 monasteries back in 16th century, today only 6 of them operate while the others are deserted.
Among the active monasteries only the Monastery of Saint Stephen has nuns, while the five rest have monks. The Monastery of Grand (Megalo) Meteoron is the largest and dates from the 14th century. The monasteries have rich frescoes which decorate the interior of the temples. Many treasures, jewels and Byzantine icons are hosted in the monasteries today. The monasteries of Meteora Greece have been characterized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Monument, due to its outstanding natural beauty and architecture.
